Veterans Memorial Garden

Flags often can be seen flying in front of local government buildings, a quiet symbol of America. In front of Crest Hill City Hall, however, there's more than that.

Honoring Local Residents

Next to a busy roadway (Plainfield Road, Route 30) that runs alongside the building is a plush green and yellow memorial garden that honors local residents who served in the military to protect Old Glory.

The garden was dedicated in 1988 and then expanded in 1995 to include an area for Crest Hill police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The garden includes large marble markers with names of residents who served in World Wars I and II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, and during peacetime. There is also a marker for the two Crest Hill police officers who fell in the line of duty. The garden also includes the flags of all the military branches.

Markers

The markers have more than 1,500 names etched onto them, with about 20 more being added every year. The entire garden was paid for through donations and volunteer work.

Adding a Resident

Residents of Crest Hill - living or dead - who served in the military and received an honorable discharge can have their names added to the markers. Residents just need to bring discharge papers and fill out a form at City Hall.
